Suggestions for date/time/place for Feastside Meet-Up 2:
(Planning and prepping, ready for some spring planting)

A: Just a thought....mid-week establishments are less likely to be so busy - better for holding a conversation! Dave's generous allotment visit sounds good to me....over a packed friday night in a pub.

Offer of my allotment still stands. Weekend of 22/23 or 28/29. A walk/chat about what grows well. Might prove nice point of inspiration. I'm about 20 mins from town (train to Bournville then 5 mins walk). On the 11 route as well for you Kings Heath types.

Either The Woodman (as it's in the mighty Feastside) or somewhere in town'd be good. Or an allotment (weekend daytime!)? Oh, or the German Market because it's festive and the lights are pretty? ;)
I'm crap at making decisions - anyone else want to add when they can/can't make it?

I'll do my best to make any time - that week sounds fine so far - although perhaps not in the Woodman.....or an allotment for an after work/dark meeting! Am I right in thinking that Feastside is becoming a "grow your own support group" in the first instance, before we start taking over the city?!

Hi all, sorry to have missed the last meeting and been so quiet on here lately (mix of tricky time at work, new house sorting etc). I'm also still getting used to the wiki :o). I'm not going to be able to do much before Christmas but will follow discussion when I can and look forward to being more involved in 2009.

Birmingham is yet to receive the full Jamie Oliver or Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall treatment – so rather than waiting for our own celebrity healthy eating/grow your own saviour, the Feastsiders are plotting to utilise vacant urban spaces for fresh fruit and veg production.

Are we mad - or could it actually happen?! Get involved.........
The inaugural ‘town hall meeting’ of the Feastsiders will take place on:

Comments for this and future meetings:

* Can't make next week's meet up but have jotted some bits down in Brainstorming and Research (and an early stage logo in the gallery!)
* Erm...how's about Eastside? The Woodsman is a good pub. Nicky.
* Right in the centre of the grassy wasteland too (and secure parking at MP!)....sounds good to me. Andrew
* The Woodsman is good for me, might not be able to get there till 7.30 though - Mark
* At some point (probably meeting no. 2 or 3) you should meet at an allotment plot and gaze in wonder at the marvellous (and sometimes unusual) things that can grow in a city. With notice, unless there's a better offer, you can use mine in Bournville. A weekend daytime meet probably.
* Woodman sounds fine but I now need to be back in Moseley for 8pm on Wednesday (sorry can't rearrange drumming lesson). I'll pop in for half an hour though. An allotment meeting in the not too distant future sounds a plan*

We'll need to find out if there are any other folks/groups doing the same or similar things to this - don't want to tread on anyone's toes. Plus, the more the merrier and if there are some existing urban gardeners locally, they may be able to give us a bit of a head-start.

If the soil's no good, let's plant in ...

It might be good to plant in containers - these can be moved if necessary, they'd get over the possible problem of contaminated soil and would also mean we can 'plant' in concreted places. Oh, and they could be transported for Show & Tell type things in schools maybe?!

If and when the owners of the land wanted to do something else with it, the veg could be transported somewhere else more easily than if it were planted in the ground.

The sort of things we could plant in:

Dustbins (with holes in the bottom for drainage.) Would recycling companies like to give us some bins for free?!
The Council's recycling boxes?! (Again, with drainage holes)
There are products made specifically for container planting (point 8 on Research page - Websites section) but these cost lots.
Old toilets, baths, sinks etc.
Tyres.
Grow-bag type things
